1. Before you travel
There are different rules for different foreign visitors to Indonesia. Most countries get a free 30 day visa while other countries need to apply for a visa before travelling.
By Twofortnights – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link
Regardless what country you are from and what visa you will be getting there are a few things every foreign visitor needs before travelling to Indonesia.
- A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Indonesia.
- A passport that has at least one complete blank page.
- Proof of a return flight or onward flight out of Indonesia.
If the immigration officer has a suspicion that you may abuse the free visa you might also be asked for proof of sufficient funds to stay in Indonesia for the duration of your visa.
The Indonesia Visa is counted per day, not per night. Your first day and last day are included in the 30 day calculation. Even if you enter Indonesia at 23:55h (11:55pm), the last 5 minutes before midnight will still be considered a full day. The same for your departure.
This visa is for a single entry visit. Every time you exit and re-enter Indonesia you will get a new 30 day free visa.
2. Indonesia Visa Free Entry for 169 countries
Nationals of 167 countries and 2 special regions can get a free 30-day non extendable visa.

This rate is the same for any passenger of any age. Infants need to pay this visa fee as well. The Indonesia visa on arrival can be extended once by another 30 days. The Indonesia visa fee can be paid in cash or credit card. If you pay with cash you can use US Dollars or any other major currency. You will find a piece of paper at the VOA payment counter with the current price in your currency.
4. Extend your Indonesia Visa
There are some options to extend your 30 day tourist visa although it depends what country you are from. 67 Visa on arrival country can extend their visa once. The extension costs USD 35 so in total you are paying USD 70 for a 60 day stay. After 60 days you will need to leave the country. Alternatively any of the above countries can do a “visa run” to extend their visa. A visa run is usually done in one day. You leave the country on a budget flight to the nearest overseas airport. You can leave on a morning flight and return on an afternoon flight.
5. Other countries
If your country is not listed above then you will need to apply for a visa at the nearest Indonesian Embassy before travelling to Indonesia.
6. Overstay penalty
If you overstay your visa then the official penalty is Rp 1,000,000 per day you have overstayed (previously 300,000 per day).
The maximum allowed time you can overstay is 60 days. If you have overstayed your Indonesia visa for more than 60 then you are in the country without valid visa. The punishment for not having a valid visa is a maximum 5 years sentence or maximum Rp 500,000,000 penalty. (article #119 of UU 6/2011). If I have a 60 visa prior to getting to Bali, do you have to go through immigration or what is the process
Yes when you arrive you will pass the immigration counter. They will check your visa and allow you to enter the country if all is OK.
Hi, hope you re good. I wish to spend my annual holiday in INDONESIA. Please can I get the requirements for a Nigerian passport holder.
You will need to visit the nearest Indonesian Embassy before travelling and apply for a visa before travelling
Great Site.
Quick query on the re-entry on the Visa on Arrival. Is there a re-entry permit available?
I arrived and took the 30 Day Visa on Arrival for $35. However I know need to goto Thailand and Malaysia for a week and return. Will I have to apply for a fresh Visa on Arrival or will i permitted to re-enter on my original 30days visa.
The length of the period is less that 30days.
The tourist visa is single entry. When you return you will get a new visa.
Hi, I’ll be arriving to Padang the 24th of september and I’m gonna stay there until 2nd of November, I can only apply for the 30 days short visit visa, so I’ll have to leave the 23th of October and then i can go back or what are my best options i hope you can help me.
When in Bali where can you get an extension on your 30day Visa ?
The 30 day Visa On Arrival costs USD 35 when you arrive in Bali. This visa can be extended once by another 30 days. You can start the extension process as early in your first 30 days as you like. Once your extension is processed it will start to be valid after your first 30 days end. So you will have a 60 day total visa regardless how early or late you start the extension process. You should extend no later than 7 days before the end of your first visa.
hi! good day,

Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone can help me out here.
I’ll be flying from Sydney, Australia arriving in Jakarta 20th September and flying out from Bali @ 23:40pm back to Sydney on the 19th October.
Since its exactly 30 days from 20th September to 19th October, will it be ok if I just stick to the visa on arrival (days) or will I need the 60 day visa.
Thanks in advance
You will have exactly 30 days so you will be fine on the free 30 day visa.
I am interested to visit. I am Nepalese student. I want to resesrch on HR Management in Indonesia Can I? Can I get any fund to research?
Hello, I’m Latvian traveling to Indonesia for More then 30days, do I get free visa for 30days and then I have to leave the country to get visa on arrival for another 30days?!? Can I arrive on 30day free visa and extend for another 30 days without leaving the country?
The free 30 day visa cannot be extended. After you used the first 30 days you can leave the country and return for a new 30 days. This visa can only be used for tourism purposes.
Hi, I am confused as to what can count as proof of adequate funds. Can you clarify please? Thanks!
Unfortunately there is no clear info on what this involves. This is however very rarely asked for unless the immigration officer suspects that you are trying to enter the country for a purpose other than tourism.
I am planning on staying in Bali for about a month and a half. I can book a flight somewhere local to head out of the country and come back, but would it be easier to just purchase the extension? If so, where do I do that? Customs? Thank you!
The visa extension needs to be done at the immigration office. This cannot be done at the airport.
Dear Team,
I would like to know whether a goverment staff who is holding Myanmar official passport needs a visa to attend 3 days meeting at Jakatar?
Regards,
MM
I’m leaving Jakarta on an EPO on Sat June 22nd then returning same day on a free tourist visa. Then, I’m off for New Deli, India on the 22nd of July. If I read your info correctly, that would be 31 days… 1 day more than allowed. What should I do? (the 1 day penalty is only 300,000 IDR… is that really an option or just an opportunity to cause stress and pressure at immigrations?)
The overstay penalty is now IDR 1,000,000 per day (I have now updated the post to reflect this change). It is an official penalty and normally not much fuss will be made providing you pay (make sure you arrive early enough).
My sister lives in Australia and is travelling home to the UK. Initially, she had booked to go to Bali for a friends wedding. However, she’s damaged her passport in a swimming pool and has been advised that it’s risky to travel on it.
Is it possible for her to travel through Indonesia, without alighting Bali airport, simply connecting on to her next flight and completing her trip home?
I understand she’d need to apply for a visa in advance if she wants to travel to Indonesia using emerging travel documents issued by her local embassy, but I just thought she could instead travel through the airports anyway as a connecting flight?
Any advice on these matters would be much appreciated.
If she is arriving one one flight and then has a separate ticket for the ongoing flight then she will need to go through immigration and collect luggage before hopping onto the next flight. With a damaged passport she will not be allowed through immigration I believe.
I’m Kenyan with a current passport. Can I get a visa on arrival? My Australian friend thinks it’s ok but I’d rather be sure
If your country is in the above list of visa free countries then you can just get the free 30 day visa on arrival.
Hello I have a Nigerian passport and I’m planning to visit my partner (she’s Indonesia) who lives in Jakarta, in December for less than 30 days. Do I need to apply for a visa? If yes, which type of Visa?
I bought a one-way ticket to Bali with the plan to backpack Asia for some months. 2 questions..
1) I would like to stay in Bali for 2 months so who do I speak to to get my extended visa and when do I do that?
2) I really don’t have a plan on where im going after Bali yet so what is the easiest way to go about showing a onward flight? Say I buy a ticket to Laos or Malaysia… when I get there are they going to ask me to show an onward flight as well? and so on…
Thanks for the help!

How many times are we allowed to exit and return to Indonesia with a Tourist visa? I’m Canadian
There are no maximum uses of the free visa. However, if you visit very often on the free visa the immigration officers may start to ask questions into what the purpose is of your visit to make sure you are not violating the rules.
Do You still have the facility of visa free entry for Sri Lankan passport holders for 30 days?
Yes.
we are traveling with a friend of my son to Bali, he is 14 years, have Dominican Republic passport, can he get visa on arrival in Bali airport?
Yes
I am travelling to Bali and Java in July, I have a New Zealand passport, I have just worked out that including the first and last day my stay will be 31 days. It appears have two options, pay the penalty of one day at the end or purchase the extension visa when I enter. I think it would be cheaper to pay the penalty, can you please advise.
You should not be overstaying your visa but if purely looking at numbers then yes, the Rp 300,000 penalty for the 1 day overstay will be the cheaper option.
HI,
I’m a Sri Lankan booked tickets and hotels for 1 week in Bali. I’m just wondering i still to apply for a visa if its less than 1 week?
I,m bit confused because there is online visa application for Sri Lankan’s.

Hello I arrive on the 26th April and my passport expires on the 28th October. I leave on the 4th May. Would I be denied entry because of the passport validity clause? Thanks.
You need 6 months validity from the day you enter the country. If you enter Indonesia on 26 April 2019 and your passport expires on 28 October 2019 then you have 6 months and 2 days left on your passport which is enough.
I have an Italian passport, do I need a visa for less than 30 day stay for Bali?
As an Italian citizen you are eligible for a 30 day free visa.
Hello i’m, i read the above instructions but i’m not yet convinced, can i travel with Ghana passport with visa on arrival ?
HI,
I just booked a trip to bali and completly forgot that I have only one page left in my german passport. will that be a problem?
thanks Ana
Although the law says you need two pages in reality you only need 1 page for Indonesian visa stamps. If your only destination is Bali then you will likely be OK.
Hello Ketut!
Can you help me figure out whether Macedonians are eligible for on-arrival-visa-extension?
I see our country in the list above (Macedonia), but I don’t see it in this list: http://www.imigrasi.go.id/index.php/en/public-services/visit-visa#voa-countries
Macedonia is on the visa free list but not on the VOA list. On above post you can see the VOA eligible countries under chapter 3

Hi I am a uk citizen and have the 30 day free visa.
We arrived on 26th June. The flight out we have booked is for 26th July at 01.30.
So we will likely pass through immigration before midnight (25/6) Will this mean we will not pay the 1 day overstay or do they go by your flight time?
Thanks
Sorry for the late response. You will likely have found out that the visa duration depends on the time you exit through the immigration counter and not the time of your flight. I hope all went well 🙂
Hi so how to l take visa for my driver’s one months

Hi,
I’m From NZ and am travelling to Bali for 10 days in July for holiday, and qualify for the free 30 day visa. However, my passport expires in December and on the immigration website it states “A valid passport with minimum validity of 6 (six) months” is needed. I don’t really want to get a new passport until next year .. is there a way around this?
They are very strict on this and if your passport does not have 6 months validity from the day you enter the country you will be refused into the country. I don’t think there is anyway around this.
Just get your new passport.
You’ll be denied boarding in NZ.
Advanced passenger processing will flag your passport as invalid.

Hello,
Is it possible to travel from Romania, enter Indonesia, get the free visa than leave for 1 day to Singapore and return to Indonesia then exit for good in those 30 days? Is there any issue with that exit and re-entering of Indonesia for just one day to visit Singapore?
Have a nice day,
Dan
Yes that is technically allowed. However Singapore immigration officials may give you hassle if you tell them that the purpose of your visit to Singapore is a visa run. Maybe if they ask you why only such a short time you say for shopping or something vague.
Hello
we will have an overstay of 3 days but I believe that the fine is now from 300k to 1 M idr but no-one really knows when it will be effective.
Do you have any idea?
Thank you for your input.
It is still 300k per day.
