1. Before you travel
There are different rules for different foreign visitors to Indonesia. Most countries get a free 30 day visa while other countries need to apply for a visa before travelling.
By Twofortnights – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link
Regardless what country you are from and what visa you will be getting there are a few things every foreign visitor needs before travelling to Indonesia.
- A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Indonesia.
- A passport that has at least one complete blank page.
- Proof of a return flight or onward flight out of Indonesia.
If the immigration officer has a suspicion that you may abuse the free visa you might also be asked for proof of sufficient funds to stay in Indonesia for the duration of your visa.
The Indonesia Visa is counted per day, not per night. Your first day and last day are included in the 30 day calculation. Even if you enter Indonesia at 23:55h (11:55pm), the last 5 minutes before midnight will still be considered a full day. The same for your departure.
This visa is for a single entry visit. Every time you exit and re-enter Indonesia you will get a new 30 day free visa.
2. Indonesia Visa Free Entry for 169 countries
Nationals of 167 countries and 2 special regions can get a free 30-day non extendable visa.
This 30 day free Indonesia visa is valid for the purpose of;
- Leisure and tourism.
- Family.
- Social.
- Art and Cultural.
- Government visits.
- Giving a lecture or attend a seminar.
- Attend a meeting held by Head office or Representative office in Indonesia.
- While in transit on the way to another country.

This rate is the same for any passenger of any age. Infants need to pay this visa fee as well. The Indonesia visa on arrival can be extended once by another 30 days. The Indonesia visa fee can be paid in cash or credit card. If you pay with cash you can use US Dollars or any other major currency. You will find a piece of paper at the VOA payment counter with the current price in your currency.
4. Extend your Indonesia Visa
There are some options to extend your 30 day tourist visa although it depends what country you are from. 67 Visa on arrival country can extend their visa once. The extension costs USD 35 so in total you are paying USD 70 for a 60 day stay. After 60 days you will need to leave the country. Alternatively any of the above countries can do a “visa run” to extend their visa. A visa run is usually done in one day. You leave the country on a budget flight to the nearest overseas airport. You can leave on a morning flight and return on an afternoon flight.
5. Other countries
If your country is not listed above then you will need to apply for a visa at the nearest Indonesian Embassy before travelling to Indonesia.
6. Overstay penalty
If you overstay your visa then the official penalty is Rp 1,000,000 per day you have overstayed (previously 300,000 per day).
The maximum allowed time you can overstay is 60 days. If you have overstayed your Indonesia visa for more than 60 then you are in the country without valid visa. The punishment for not having a valid visa is a maximum 5 years sentence or maximum Rp 500,000,000 penalty. (article #119 of UU 6/2011). Hi, I will need to leave Bali for a visa run, I will be going to Kuala Lumpur. I was wondering if I can book a return flight on the same day? or am I supposed to stay outside of Bali for a minimum 24 hours?
I read on some forums that some people just waited around 3 hours after arrival in Kuala Lumpur airport before flying back to Bali. is this possible?
You can return instantly. There is no law that requires you a minimum time.
Hello, I am from the Netherlands and I currently have a 60 day tourist visa for indonesia. I am here for 63 days so i have an overstay of 3 days. If I go to Malaysia for 10 days and then come back to Indonesia only to catch my flight back home from Jakarta, will I get a 30 day visa if I arrive at the AirPort in jakarta?
Kind regards,
Lindsay
If your on a tourist visa you should b able to just extend it a lot better then doing a visa run
A tourist visa can b extended up to 4 times for a total of 180 max days hope this helped
I am from India. I wanted to know how much minimum money I need to carry with me to avail of visa exemption at Bali Airport. Please also advise specification of photograph.
You do not need a photograph. There is no clear instruction on minimum funds. It is very unlikely the immigration officers will ask for proof of funds unless they have suspicions that you were unable to pay for your stay in Indonesia.
I’m from pakistan and how i get visa
Hello
I am a UK citizen, I work in an international humanitarian NGO and I am coming to Indonesia for one week for a meeting with colleagues and deliver a training to them. Can I get a VOA if it is for business reason?
Or do I need to apply in advance from the UK for a business VISA?
Thanks
Anne
Good morning
I am British (UK passport) I work with an international NGO and I should come to Indonesia for one week to attend a training and a meeting with some colleagues. Can I get a 30 day free VISA upon arrival, if it is for business purposes?
Many thanks
Anne
Finally – a straightforward article about visas! Thanks for this! My husband and I are planning to stay in Bali early 2020 for around 6 months (180 days). That means 3 times of leaving Indonesia and coming back to get another 60 days. Is there a limit to how many times we can stay on a VoA in a given period of time? Is this even legal?
There is no legal limit on how often you can enter on a VOA. However, if you do it VERY often then the immigration officers may start to question why you are being a tourist for so long as the VOA is only intended for tourism.
Your probs better of getting a tourist visa and extending it 4 times ensted of doing that many visa runs
Good morning. I communicate with you since I want to apply for a visa to go on vacation with my family to Indonesia. My nationality is Colombian.

Hi, Do I able to visit Bali with refugee travel document issued by USA
Hi Ketut,
I see that you seem to be pretty sure about what you say and so I would like to explain to you my situation.
I’m a Portuguese passport holder with 5 months and 20 days validity instead of full 6 months and I have been the past six months travelling in Australia.
Right now I have a flight to Bali for 1 week holiday and then I’m returning to my country, Portugal.
So my question is if I can get on that flight and apply for a visa on arrival, or should I go to the Indonesian consulate here in Sydney to try to get a visa (If there is one) or just try to renew my passport in a Portuguese Consulate?
Thank you in advance Ketut
Hi,
I am Indian and my family need to visit Bali (me and wife).

Hi, i’m going to Bali on September 3rd, i’m planning to ask for the Visa on Arrival and extending it for a total of 60 days. I have a question, regarding the flight as a proof of me leaving the country, do I need to buy it within the first 30 days, or can i just book a flight after, maybe 56 days from my first arriving in Bali?
Thank you
Normally you would need the flight ticket already but it is possible to explain your situation and planning and immigration officers will understand.
Hi,
We are travelling to Bali 27th May and I’m a UK citizen. In the start of the article it states a “free” 30 day visa for 169 countries including UK then under it mentions a visa on arrival costing $35. Is it possible to get a free visa or are they all $35? Either way is there any possibility of getting a visa from embassy in London and if so would this save us time at the airport?
Visitors from the UK can get a free 30 day visa upon arrival in Indonesia. The USD 35 visa is a visa that you can extend once by another 30 days creating a total 60 day stay. If you will stay maximum 30 days then the free, non extendable visa will be enough.
I am travelling to Jakarta and will get a VOA on 15th September which will end on 14th October, however, I want to take a trip to Bali on 12th October and leave from Bali on 17th October. Can I get a visa on arrival in Bali while travelling from Jakarta?
Hi my wife & I would like to stay in Bali for 6 to 12 months as our daughter recently started work there on a 12 month contract.Which would be the easiest visa to apply for?
Hi
I have syrian passport with swedish residency document
Can i get visa on arrival or i have to apply in the embassy ?
*Tourist visa my plan is to Bali island
I am a Malaysian with a valid Malaysian Passport. Can I enter Indonesia with a VISA-ON-ARRIVAL paying the required USD35, so that I can travel within Indonesia to meet business people for the 30 days provided. If it requires a longer time in Indonesia, I can then apply for the 30-day extension.
Hello,
I have the paid visa on arrival. If I start the visa extension process at an local immigration office one day before my visa expires, do I need to pay for overstay penalty as the visa extension seems to require about 7 days?
Thanks nick
Hello, you should start the extension process earlier. I am not sure what the consequences are if you only start one day before. Either they will (a) just go ahead and accept or (b) charge you overstay penalty while your visa is processed (1 million per day) or (c) refuse to extend and tell you to exit the country (after which you can return on a new visa). Can you come back here and let us know how it went for you? I’m curious.
Hi Ketut. We are a french family travelling from KL to Bali tomorrow August 5th 2019. We just realized my 13 years old son passport expires Jan 20th 2020, leaving exactly 5 months and 15 days validity instead of full 6 months. We are staying only 6 days, leaving 11th Aug, we have full hotel booking and return ticket. Please advise how to proceed. Thank you.
Hello, unfortunately you will be refused to enter Indonesia and more likely refused to get onto the plane when you leave home. Indonesia is VERY strict on the 6-month rule. I hope you will still be able to recover your vacation somehow.
Hello I am from Pakistan and live in itlay I have a doucoments of itlay I want to visit in Indonesia for 30 days please confirm me requirements of visa and witch doucoments I need for for visa ,one more it’s possible to come there on invention latter ?
My girlfriend is from the phillipines and just lost her passport.
There is no consulate in Bali and the closest one is in Jakarta.
Is there anyway to fly from Bali to Jakarta without a passport?
I would call the airline to ask. Probably another way of photo identification will be accepted such as a driver license with photo or a Philippine Identity card with photo. Again best to ask the airline but I think that will be fine.
Hello,
I am going to be in Bali for 32 days.
I know I get a free visa for the first 30 but what do I do for the extra two days?
Can you advice me on the prices and steps for the extra 2 days.
You have 4 options. (a) apply for a 60 day visa before travelling. (b) when you enter Bali you purchase the USD 35 Visa On Arrival which can be extended once by a second 30 days (this is limited to 67 countries). (c) you enter on the free 30 day visa and do a visa run to a nearby country to then return to Indonesia on a new 30 day free visa. (d) you enter on a free 30 day visa and “accidentally” overstay your 30 day free visa by 2 days. You will then have to pay a IDR 1,000,000 per day overstay penalty at the airport on the day of departure.
Hi Ketut,
Thanks for your selfless service. I have a Nigeria passport and Nigeria not listed among the free visa country listed. Can I travel through nearest country to benefits from the free visa Policy.
Thank you
Hi guys,
I have a question. i have a moroccan passport.
Does this mean i can enter Bali also ( is it also seen as Indonesia )?
Does anybody know?
Thanks in advance!
Yes correct. Have a wonderful holiday!
Hi Ketut,
Can I directly booked an exit ticket that is beyond 30 days if I know I want to extend? or immigration will require an exit ticket with the 30 days disregarding if I want to extend?
Yes you can. If the immigration officers ask then you can explain.
If I have a 60 visa prior to getting to Bali, do you have to go through immigration or what is the process
Yes when you arrive you will pass the immigration counter. They will check your visa and allow you to enter the country if all is OK.
Hi, hope you re good. I wish to spend my annual holiday in INDONESIA. Please can I get the requirements for a Nigerian passport holder.
You will need to visit the nearest Indonesian Embassy before travelling and apply for a visa before travelling
Greetings, I am a Colombian citizen residing in China. I know I need a tourist visa, my question is, how long does it usually take for the visa to be issued once you have handed in all the required documents? I will apply for it from Beijing, and will be traveling in the end of this month, I will stay for about five days in Bali.
Great Site.
Quick query on the re-entry on the Visa on Arrival. Is there a re-entry permit available?
I arrived and took the 30 Day Visa on Arrival for $35. However I know need to goto Thailand and Malaysia for a week and return. Will I have to apply for a fresh Visa on Arrival or will i permitted to re-enter on my original 30days visa.
The length of the period is less that 30days.
The tourist visa is single entry. When you return you will get a new visa.
Hi, I’ll be arriving to Padang the 24th of september and I’m gonna stay there until 2nd of November, I can only apply for the 30 days short visit visa, so I’ll have to leave the 23th of October and then i can go back or what are my best options i hope you can help me.
When in Bali where can you get an extension on your 30day Visa ?
The 30 day Visa On Arrival costs USD 35 when you arrive in Bali. This visa can be extended once by another 30 days. You can start the extension process as early in your first 30 days as you like. Once your extension is processed it will start to be valid after your first 30 days end. So you will have a 60 day total visa regardless how early or late you start the extension process. You should extend no later than 7 days before the end of your first visa.
hi! good day,

Hello
I am South African and have a 30 day non extendable visa for Indonesia. I want to stay a few days longer, can I do a visa run and fly out of Indonesia and fly back same day to get a new visa?
Yes you can do this.
I am Pakistani national working in Saudi Arabia. I wish to visit Indonesia along with my family for tourism (max. 5 to 7 days). Can you let me know the tourist visa requirements & time expected in processing of visa?
Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone can help me out here.
I’ll be flying from Sydney, Australia arriving in Jakarta 20th September and flying out from Bali @ 23:40pm back to Sydney on the 19th October.
Since its exactly 30 days from 20th September to 19th October, will it be ok if I just stick to the visa on arrival (days) or will I need the 60 day visa.
Thanks in advance
You will have exactly 30 days so you will be fine on the free 30 day visa.
I am interested to visit. I am Nepalese student. I want to resesrch on HR Management in Indonesia Can I? Can I get any fund to research?
Hello, I’m Latvian traveling to Indonesia for More then 30days, do I get free visa for 30days and then I have to leave the country to get visa on arrival for another 30days?!? Can I arrive on 30day free visa and extend for another 30 days without leaving the country?
The free 30 day visa cannot be extended. After you used the first 30 days you can leave the country and return for a new 30 days. This visa can only be used for tourism purposes.
Hi, I am confused as to what can count as proof of adequate funds. Can you clarify please? Thanks!
Unfortunately there is no clear info on what this involves. This is however very rarely asked for unless the immigration officer suspects that you are trying to enter the country for a purpose other than tourism.
I am planning on staying in Bali for about a month and a half. I can book a flight somewhere local to head out of the country and come back, but would it be easier to just purchase the extension? If so, where do I do that? Customs? Thank you!
The visa extension needs to be done at the immigration office. This cannot be done at the airport.
Dear Team,
I would like to know whether a goverment staff who is holding Myanmar official passport needs a visa to attend 3 days meeting at Jakatar?
Regards,
MM
I’m leaving Jakarta on an EPO on Sat June 22nd then returning same day on a free tourist visa. Then, I’m off for New Deli, India on the 22nd of July. If I read your info correctly, that would be 31 days… 1 day more than allowed. What should I do? (the 1 day penalty is only 300,000 IDR… is that really an option or just an opportunity to cause stress and pressure at immigrations?)
The overstay penalty is now IDR 1,000,000 per day (I have now updated the post to reflect this change). It is an official penalty and normally not much fuss will be made providing you pay (make sure you arrive early enough).
My sister lives in Australia and is travelling home to the UK. Initially, she had booked to go to Bali for a friends wedding. However, she’s damaged her passport in a swimming pool and has been advised that it’s risky to travel on it.
Is it possible for her to travel through Indonesia, without alighting Bali airport, simply connecting on to her next flight and completing her trip home?
I understand she’d need to apply for a visa in advance if she wants to travel to Indonesia using emerging travel documents issued by her local embassy, but I just thought she could instead travel through the airports anyway as a connecting flight?
Any advice on these matters would be much appreciated.
If she is arriving one one flight and then has a separate ticket for the ongoing flight then she will need to go through immigration and collect luggage before hopping onto the next flight. With a damaged passport she will not be allowed through immigration I believe.
I’m Kenyan with a current passport. Can I get a visa on arrival? My Australian friend thinks it’s ok but I’d rather be sure
If your country is in the above list of visa free countries then you can just get the free 30 day visa on arrival.
Hello I have a Nigerian passport and I’m planning to visit my partner (she’s Indonesia) who lives in Jakarta, in December for less than 30 days. Do I need to apply for a visa? If yes, which type of Visa?
I bought a one-way ticket to Bali with the plan to backpack Asia for some months. 2 questions..
1) I would like to stay in Bali for 2 months so who do I speak to to get my extended visa and when do I do that?
2) I really don’t have a plan on where im going after Bali yet so what is the easiest way to go about showing a onward flight? Say I buy a ticket to Laos or Malaysia… when I get there are they going to ask me to show an onward flight as well? and so on…

Do i need to apply for visa to Bali for short trip travel? My passport is Macedonian
Hi,
I can have a free visa for 30 days but it is not extendable. If I want to stay longer than 30 days, I would need to exit and re-enter the country? I am able to re-enter after a short period outside (eg. 2 or 3 days in Malasia or Singapur). Thanks
Yes you can exit and return the same day or in a few days time.
