1. Before you travel
There are different rules for different foreign visitors to Indonesia. Most countries get a free 30 day visa while other countries need to apply for a visa before travelling.
By Twofortnights – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link
Regardless what country you are from and what visa you will be getting there are a few things every foreign visitor needs before travelling to Indonesia.
- A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Indonesia.
- A passport that has at least one complete blank page.
- Proof of a return flight or onward flight out of Indonesia.
If the immigration officer has a suspicion that you may abuse the free visa you might also be asked for proof of sufficient funds to stay in Indonesia for the duration of your visa.
The Indonesia Visa is counted per day, not per night. Your first day and last day are included in the 30 day calculation. Even if you enter Indonesia at 23:55h (11:55pm), the last 5 minutes before midnight will still be considered a full day. The same for your departure.
This visa is for a single entry visit. Every time you exit and re-enter Indonesia you will get a new 30 day free visa.
2. Indonesia Visa Free Entry for 169Â countries

This rate is the same for any passenger of any age. Infants need to pay this visa fee as well. The Indonesia visa on arrival can be extended once by another 30 days. The Indonesia visa fee can be paid in cash or credit card. If you pay with cash you can use US Dollars or any other major currency. You will find a piece of paper at the VOA payment counter with the current price in your currency.
4. Extend your Indonesia Visa
There are some options to extend your 30 day tourist visa although it depends what country you are from. 67 Visa on arrival country can extend their visa once. The extension costs USD 35 so in total you are paying USD 70 for a 60 day stay. After 60 days you will need to leave the country. Alternatively any of the above countries can do a “visa run” to extend their visa. A visa run is usually done in one day. You leave the country on a budget flight to the nearest overseas airport. You can leave on a morning flight and return on an afternoon flight.
5. Other countries
If your country is not listed above then you will need to apply for a visa at the nearest Indonesian Embassy before travelling to Indonesia.
6. Overstay penalty
If you overstay your visa then the official penalty is Rp 1,000,000 per day you have overstayed (previously 300,000 per day).
The maximum allowed time you can overstay is 60 days. If you have overstayed your Indonesia visa for more than 60 then you are in the country without valid visa. The punishment for not having a valid visa is a maximum 5 years sentence or maximum Rp 500,000,000 penalty. (article #119 of UU 6/2011). Hello,
I’m from Croatia and I’m planing to visit Indonesia with my girlfriend this August.
I’m interested if it’s possible to enter Indonesia in Lombok International Airport (LOP)for Croatian citizens with 30 day free visa?
Croatia is on 30 days free visa list, but on some sites Lombok Airport is not listed as one of possible entry points.
I see that LOP is on your list of entry points, but is there any reason it’s emboldened?
Thanks and regards,
Almir
Hello Almir, initially Lombok airport was not available for free visa entries. They then changed the law and Lombok now is able to process free visas. Many websites are out of date and still show the old information. The info copied above is pretty accurate and taken from actual Indonesian Laws (not copied from other websites). I made the most common airports bold so it is easier to spot the most common airports 🙂
Hello,
I am from Serbia, and I’m planning to visit Indonezia (Bali) in august, for tourism, and i will stay 14 days.
My question is ;
I will get free visa at Bali aeroport ?
I don’t need to aply for visa in Indonezian ambasy in Serbia at all?
No need to show return ticket and hotel resevations?
I am asking this questions because the travel agency asked from me to get visa to be able to travel
So i am a little bit confused now,
Can you answer me please?
Hello Vlasta, if your country is one of the 169 visa free countries (see point 2 above) then you are eligible for a free 30 day visa providing you make follow the pre-requirements (see point 1 above). Serbia gets a free 30 day visa for tourism and if your travel agency says you need a visa then your travel agency is wrong.
Hello,
I hold a UK Passport and arrive in Bali(Port of Benoa) on a cruise ship. Am I eligible for a free visa or will I need a VOA.
Thanks in anticipation for your help.
Regards
Butch
Tanjung Benoa in Bali is one of the 88 harbours that are able to process free 30 day visas.
Thank you for your help.
Hi there!
I’m a Citizen of Bangladesh, but residing in China. My wife is Chinese and we are planing to visit Indonesia from August 2nd till August 7th. Are we eligible to get the 30 days entry?
Hello, if you are from Bangladesh or China you can get a free visa on arrival providing you have made sure you meet the requirements (see point 1).
Hello,
My name is Lindsey, and I am a U.S. citizen traveling to Indonesia in a few weeks. I have a question regarding the “visa free entry.”
Because I will be staying in Indonesia for LESS than 30 days, and because I’m a U.S. citizen, I qualify for the visa exemption when arriving there (so, just a stamp, correct?). I traveled to Indonesia in April through the Bali airport and was able to receive just the stamp for entry.
However, When I traveled to Indonesia in January, I entered the country through arrival at the Lombok International Airport, where I was required to BUY a visa. I was told that Lombok International Airport does not yet allow people to get only the visa exemption stamp yet.
I see that this website and several others do, in fact, list Lombok airport as a designated entry point for visa exemptions. I’m wondering if you can clarify this information for me. Has this airport recently been added to the list? I would prefer to fly into the Lombok airport, but do not want to do so if I will need to buy the visa again.
Please let me know as soon as possible.
Thanks!
Hello Lindsey, Lombok is one of the 29 airports in Indonesia that is able to process free 30 day visa on arrivals. I have uploaded a copy of the law where you can see that Lombok is one of the airports listed. Lombok airport is on page 6, point 4.
Great, thank you so much for the quick and helpful reply. Much appreciated!
One last question…do you know if Lombok was recently added to that list of 29 airports? Just curious why I was told they didn’t allow the free visa stamp back in January.
Thanks!
Hi Lindsey, Lombok was only recently added. If you have a look at the pdf file I linked to the date of the law shows 18 April 2016. When you visited Lombok in January there were no free visa facilities yet.

i am Lebanese going to Bali with a transit in Jakarta :
1- do i need a visa in advance. I saw the country on the list i just want to make sure.
2- what documents do i need to bring with me.
3- do they need to see how much cash i have or only credit cards?
4- what to do in Jakarta and then what to do in Bali airports?
thanks
Hello Simon,
1. You are eligible for a free 30 day visa
2. Please have a look above at chapter 1, before you travel
3. If they ask (very unlikely) you will need to proof sufficient funds to spend your holiday. This may include proof of a confirmed/paid hotel reservation.
4. You will get your visa at the immigration counter.
Hi
I am travelling to Bali with a friends, we have Indian and USA passports. We are entering and exiting Bali from Denpasar and are in Bali for about 15 days. Upon reading the above, my understanding was that I dont require a visa – however when I left the Bangalore airport in India, the immigration authorities there insisted that I need a visa on arrival. Please clarify.
India and US citizens are entitled to a free 30 day visa on arrival that is valid for maximum 30 days. You can skip the payment counter and head straight to the immigration counter. Have a wonderful trip!
I am booked to travel to Bali in the first week of October, 2016 for a vacation with family. I have read the instructions given on this page with step-wise details. Thanks for providing this information.
My question is : I see that I and my family are eligible as per details given in Step 1. I also see that Indian passport holders are eligible for free 30 day VISA.
So my question is : At the airport ( Denpasar), do I head straight to immigration and not go to the VoA counter? Do I also need to be carrying sufficient cash with me just in case the Immigration officer asks (for the purpose of funds needed for stay in Bali and not for VoA payment) ? If yes, what would you recommend is the value of local currency in cash I need to carry with me ( for a family of four – aged 39, 38, 10 and 6 years)
You do not need to queue at the VOA counter. You can proceed straight away to the immigration counter. Although they have the right to ask you I have personally never heard an immigration officer ask for proof of sufficient funds. If they do ask for proof (very unlikely) then perhaps bank statements are sufficient. Also, in the unlikely event the immigration officer has doubts that you can support yourself while in Indonesia you can also show proof of a confirmed / paid Bali hotel reservation and proof of your home bound flight. I would not worry to much about proof of funds.
Have a wonderful trip!
Is the immigration counter inside the DPS airport? Can you provide any specific direction of the immigration counter for free visa stamp? Thanks in advance. The information provided here is very helpful and I have seen you responding to every query.
Hello Saha, as you might have expected it is virtually impossible to leave the international arrival terminal without passing the immigration counter so it is pretty hard to miss it. If I would have to give directions it is in the large arrival hall. There will be two or three counters first where you can pay the USD 35 visa on arrival which is extendable by another 30 days. If you don’t plan on staying for more than 30 days they you can skip the visa payment counter and just head straight to the immigration counter in the same hall to get your free 30 day visa (if you are one of the 169 countries).
Hi, I have an Indian Passport and I have traveled 4 times this year with Visa on Arrival. Can I travel again with VISA on arrival to attend some business meetings?

It is very rare that the immigration officers ask for proof of funds if you come on a free 30 day visa and I don’t think you will have an issue with this.

Hi, I am a Bangladeshi traveling to Bali in 2 weeks.I have a long transit in Singapore. I am afraid since it’s a new law their immigration officials might not be well aware about the fact that Bangladeshi citizens have visa free entry now and will face difficulty clearing Singapore immigrations. Could you provide any link to the official document so thay i can show in case any problem arises?
Hello, you can find a copy of the official paperwork on the following page; http://topbali.com/indonesia-free-visa-entry/
I am an American citizen.
On the list of 169 countries free visa, there is “USA”.
On the list of 62 countries visa on arrival, there is “United States”.
Which one is correct?
Hi James, are they not both the same? USA (United States of America) and United States? Happy to edit if wrong.
Hi. Yes that’s the point – U.S. is in both visa-free AND visa in arrival (VOA) list. So when I arrive, do I need to get a visa or not?
Thanks.
Hi James, you can choose to either (a) get the free 30 day visa on arrival or (b) pay USD 35 for the 30 day visa on arrival. These are two different visas. The free 30 day visa is non-extendable. If you pay for the visa on arrival then you can extend it once by another 30 days. If you only plan to be in Indonesia for maximum 30 days then the free visa will be best. If you wish to stay longer than 30 days then you can choose to pay for the USD 35 visa on arrival and then extend once by another 30 days. Sorry slightly confusing but that’s how it is 😉

Hi,
Has the Indonesian ministry of Law and Human rights yet released any regulations for Presidential decree on visa-exemption?
Bangladeshi tourists still can’t get past the immigration at Dhaka airport without a visa stamp, even though we are on the visa-free list!
If you have a Bangladesh passport then you can get a free 30 day visa. Perhaps you can print of a copy of the law (see above). Bangladesh is on page 6 point 16.
Dear Ketut, which countries that are visa exempt can not apply for a visa on arrival?
Appreciate your reply. Thank you!
Hello Phoenix, I have added the visa on arrival countries to the blog post under chapter 3.
Hi there!
I am planning on flying into Jakarta and have both an Australian and UK passport. I am hoping to extend a 30 day visa on arrival to 60 days. What is the easiest way to do this in Jakarta and how long should this take? Thank you so much!
Hi Hillary, in Bali you need to visit the immigration office latest one week before your first 30 day visa expires. On the first visit you drop your passport and complete paperwork. At the second visit they take your biometric data which is digital picture and digital fingerprints. On the third visit you collect your passport with visa extension and pay the extension fee. I am not sure about Jakarta but I think it will be similar.
Hi Mr Ketut,
Does the airport in Jogjakarta offer free visa too? like in Jakarta and Bali? or do I still need to pay $35 VOA?
Thanks!
Yes, now you can also arrive and depart from Yogyakarta on a 30 day free visa if you are one of the 169 countries.
Hello, is this a new thing? I was in Jogja a couple of months ago and I had to pay $35 visa on arrival. Have this ports of entry and exit been extended now?
This is a recent change (March 2016). Previously free visas were not available in Yogja which is why you had to pay.
sir i am from bangladesh going to sit for EDAIC EXAM in Jakarta .i need your visa .how can i proceed
Hi there,
I have a UK passport and want to enter Indonesia overland via. Entikong and from your article this is possible, am I correct?
Because when looking directly on the UK embassy website it seems I can only exit via. Entikong, which is correct?
Below is the UK indonesian embassy website for reference:
http://www.indonesianembassy.org.uk/consular/consular_visa_type_free.html
Thanks for any info! 🙂
Hello Bea, the website you have linked to seems to be outdated. The Indonesian immigration website maintained by the Indonesian Government shows that you can both arrive and depart from Entikong. Continue here to Indonesian Government website.
Dear Ketut Bali,
“There are 62 country who can get a 30 day visa on arrival at USD 35 per person. That is Libya and 61 countries from the free visa list.”
Which 62 countries?
Thank you.
Hi, is this policy implemented in all the countries that are listed? In Nepal embassy of Indonesia says it will take time to implement. Even if it is not implemented in Nepal, can we travel with free visa entry policy?
Hello Ceezana, this new law is already implemented in Indonesia. If you have a Nepal passport then you will get a free 30 day visa on arrival providing you have at least 6 months validity left in your passport, at least one empty page and a departure flight from Indonesia within 30 days of your arrival.
is there visa free entry for pakistanies in indonesia pleasae reply
Pakistan citizens cannot get the free visa unfortunately. If a Pakistani citizen wishes to visit Indonesia they need to apply for a visa before travelling.
Hello!
I am citizen of Ukraine which was just added to the list of 164 countries.
We plan to fly to Lombok next week. Today I have called embassy in Kiev( Ukraine) and they have replied that yes, there is a law but no instructions arrived from Indonesia to Ukrainian embassy. Therefore they said its up to you either to make visa or not.
The question is whether Indonesian airports are already aware of these new rules and are granting free visas to citizens of above mentioned countries.
Many thanks
Aleksey
Lombok is already granting 30 day free visas. Have a good trip!
Hi, Is the free 30 day visa for 154 countries already implemented. When calling the airline or the Indonesian Consulate in Nepal they said it’s not yet implemented.
The 30 day free visa is already implemented for 169 countries including Nepal.
Hi,
I am from Albania and I am planning to visit Indonesia for about 10 days for tourism purpose. As I see in the new list, Albania is one of the countries that can get a VOA (visa on arrival), BUT, in the official page of embassy of the rep.of Indonesia in Sofia (the one that covers Albania) the list isn’t updates yet: http://www.indonesia.bg/images/list%20of%20VOA.htm
My question is: “Is this decision official and updated in the system in airports and embassy or not yet?”
I would really appreciate your answer.
Iva
Hello Iva, the new law is already implemented and Albanian citizens can get a free 30 day visa into Indonesia. You can see a copy of the Indonesia free visa law over here. Albania is on page six, second country.
Hello,
I am a bit confused as to how I can get a free Visa? Is the information above correct, that you can get a free Visa at 29 airports, or is it still just at 7?
Kind regards,
Matthew
Hello Matthew, you can enter AND exit Indonesia on a free 30 day visa through 29 airports, 88 harbours and 7 land borders. This is a recent change and I have updated the article so it is less confusing.
what if a person from country listed in list of 154 countries enters from any other airport that does not offer visa free entry.
Will he be allowed to enter the country with some penalty?
All 169 countries can now both enter and exit on a free visa from 29 airports, 88 harbours and 7 land borders. I have updated this post to reflect these changes.
Hi.
You mentioned in the text: “We will split these in 15+154 countries as they each have slightly different restrictions.”
But you actually did not split these 15+154. Can you please mark those 15 somehow in the list? Thank you.
Hello Orko, thank you for spotting that. As of recently the rules for all countries are identical (they were different previously). I have updated the article.

Hi, I am a regular visitor , maybe 12 times per annum and stay for between 2 and 5 days each visit. I usually stay at the same hotel. I come to visit friends.
Do the new visa limitations apply to me if I am able to prove that I have such short stays?
Will I be denied entry on my next trip in November? Considering I was in bali in August and September? Both of those trips were respectively 2 and 6 days.
I am worried about the new rules as I am also booked for February, April and June.
I am 55 next birthday, maybe I need to apply for a multiple entry visa or ask for a retirement visa early? I have a business in Australia (not tourism) .
I am confused.
Hi Geoffrey,
The Bali immigration department is going to do an extra effort to stop foreigners working illegally in Bali.
If you are worried (although you have no reasons to) then perhaps you can bring a copy of your hotel reservation and/or flight reservation. Maybe you can also keep a few business cards in your wallet that shows you have a business to return to in Australia.
I am pretty sure you will be fine and the ones that need to be worried are those who work here illegally.
Have a good trip Geoffrey!
Am I reading this right that as a Belanda International I for instance can book a return flight with 60 days in between and ON ARRIVAL DENPASAR pay usdlrs 35.- for the second part of 30 days the so called extension !!? Reason I ask is that in the past for a 60 day Visa we had to apply for it at the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague.
Hello Ruud, here is what you can do as a Dutch national;
When you enter the country, you refuse the 30 day “free visa” but choose to pay USD 35 for the 30 day “visa on arrival” (VOA). You cannot extend the free visa but you CAN extend the Visa On Arrival providing you choose to pay for it on arrival.
After your first 30 days (VOA) you go to the immigration office and extend by another 30 days. For the extension you need to pay a second USD 35. So … in total you pay USD 70 for a 60 day visa.
Another thing, to extend the VOA you need to start the process latest one week before your first 30 days expire. The extension process takes about 5-7 working days (in Bali). During the extension process you need to leave your passport at the immigration office and you need to visit 3 times. The first visit is when you deliver your passport and complete paperwork. The second visit is when they take biometric data (digital picture and digital fingerprints) and payment. The third visit is when you go and collect your passport.
You can also use a visa agent then you only need to do the second visit (biometric data). As you can see the process is quite cumbersome and if you can get the 60 days before travelling then that will save you valuable holiday time.
I hope this somewhat answers your question. If not please let me know. Wishing you a fantastic trip!
Thanks Ketut , its very clear to me now !
