1. Before you travel
There are different rules for different foreign visitors to Indonesia. Most countries get a free 30 day visa while other countries need to apply for a visa before travelling.
By Twofortnights – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, Link
Regardless what country you are from and what visa you will be getting there are a few things every foreign visitor needs before travelling to Indonesia.
- A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Indonesia.
- A passport that has at least one complete blank page.
- Proof of a return flight or onward flight out of Indonesia.
If the immigration officer has a suspicion that you may abuse the free visa you might also be asked for proof of sufficient funds to stay in Indonesia for the duration of your visa.
The Indonesia Visa is counted per day, not per night. Your first day and last day are included in the 30 day calculation. Even if you enter Indonesia at 23:55h (11:55pm), the last 5 minutes before midnight will still be considered a full day. The same for your departure.
This visa is for a single entry visit. Every time you exit and re-enter Indonesia you will get a new 30 day free visa.

This rate is the same for any passenger of any age. Infants need to pay this visa fee as well. The Indonesia visa on arrival can be extended once by another 30 days. The Indonesia visa fee can be paid in cash or credit card. If you pay with cash you can use US Dollars or any other major currency. You will find a piece of paper at the VOA payment counter with the current price in your currency.
4. Extend your Indonesia Visa
There are some options to extend your 30 day tourist visa although it depends what country you are from. 67 Visa on arrival country can extend their visa once. The extension costs USD 35 so in total you are paying USD 70 for a 60 day stay. After 60 days you will need to leave the country. Alternatively any of the above countries can do a “visa run” to extend their visa. A visa run is usually done in one day. You leave the country on a budget flight to the nearest overseas airport. You can leave on a morning flight and return on an afternoon flight.
5. Other countries
If your country is not listed above then you will need to apply for a visa at the nearest Indonesian Embassy before travelling to Indonesia.
6. Overstay penalty
If you overstay your visa then the official penalty is Rp 1,000,000 per day you have overstayed (previously 300,000 per day).
The maximum allowed time you can overstay is 60 days. If you have overstayed your Indonesia visa for more than 60 then you are in the country without valid visa. The punishment for not having a valid visa is a maximum 5 years sentence or maximum Rp 500,000,000 penalty. (article #119 of UU 6/2011). Hi there,
I plan on coming to Bali on a one way ticket from South Africa and getting a visa on arrival. Do you think it’s possible to come on a one way ticket or will I need to book a return even if I don’t plan on leaving?
Thank you!
You are supposed to have a return ticket. While the immigration may allow you to enter if you can give them a good explanation on why you don’t have a return ticket, it will most likely be your airline which will refuse you to board the plane as your airline will be responsible to fly you out of Indonesia should you be refused entry. What you could do is try and find the cheapest possible flight out of Indonesia such as Jakarta to Singapore or Bali to Kuala Lumpur.
Hi question. So I’m from Japan and planning to stay at jakarta for 56days. My country is able to visit 30days free. But i need to extend(60days) so I can stay longer thant 30days. Do I need to pay 35USD only? Or 35USDX2= 70USD
When you enter the country you choose to pay the USD 35 for the first 30 days Visa On Arrival. You can extend that Visa once by a second 30 days and pay another USD 35. Alternatively you can apply for a 60 day tourist visa before travelling or you can enter on a free 30 day visa, leave the country for a day and re-enter on a new 30 day free visa.
Is the 60 day “tourist” visa different than the 60 day “social” visa? Or are they the same? In another words, if I want to visit Indonesia for 49 days, do I have to get an Indonesian sponsor? I do not want to stay over 60 days.
I want to get a Visa at the San Francisco Indonesian consulate BEFORE coming to Bali for a 49 day stay. Do I have to get the “social” visa, which requires a sponsor, or can I get a “tourist”” visa, which would NOT require a sponsor? I am a US citizen.
Tourist visa should be sufficient.
Hi, i am from Uganda and would like to visit Indonesia-Jakarta in June, i got some information online about your embassy in Uganda-Kampala and the visa requirements. since my country is listed among the 169 do i still need to go to the embassy and apply for the visa or i buy my ticket(to and return) and travel. please advise
Uganda citizens can get a free 30 day visa providing they meet the requirements as shown in chapter 1 above.
G Day,
I am nepali passport holder, i m on business trip in china now, want to go to jakarta and bali for my vacation for a week, Pls advise me , do i need to apply for my visa?
Thanks
Nepal is one of the 169 countries eligible for a free 30 day visa providing you meet the requirements mentioned in chapter #1 above.
Hi! We are french and we are doing a world trip with our camper van. We are now in Malaysia and are planning to go to Sumatra first for 2 months (in July). I guess we will have to apply for a 60 days visa in Kuala Lumpur before entering Indonesia. Then, after 60 days (beginning of Sept.) we will come back to Malaysia for a few days and we plan to go back to Indonesia for another 2 months (to visit Java, Lombok etc…). Is it easy to get the 60 days visa in KL and in that case, do we need to go to an immigration office in Sumatra after 30 days (1st visa)? Do we also need a return ticket when we will go to apply for the 60 days visa in KL?
Hi Eva, wow, sounds like an exciting trip. If you get the 60 day visa in Kuala Lumpur then you can stay in Indonesia 60 days straight with no need to report to Immigrations. There is an option to extend the 60 day visa while in Indonesia. You can contact our friends at http://www.visa4bali.com for further info.
Hi,
My boss’s daughter is a US citizen and I understand that she will be given a 30 day free visa upon arrival. She wants to stay for 2 months. In this case, what is the procedure?
You cannot stay 2 months straight with the free visa. The free visa is maximum 30 days, non extendable. If she wants to stay for 60 days then she can pay the USD 35 visa on arrival (valid for 30 days) which can be extended once by a second 30 days (pay another 30 days). The extension has to be started latest 1 week before the first visa expires. The extension process will take 3 visits to the immigration office. One other alternative is to apply for a 60 day tourist visa before travelling at the nearest Indonesian Embassy. Please note that the Indonesia visa is counted by DAYS and not by MONTHS or by NIGHTS. The 30 day visa includes the day you arrive and also the day you depart. If you enter the country at 23:55h then the 5 minutes before midnight are already calculated as 1 day (even if it is only 5 minutes).
Dear Sir
i have moroccan passport, i entered last 13th of April. i understood the visa is not extendable. so i will exit next week 09th of MAy. i will return on 12th of May, can i pay 35USD to be able to extend it locally in bali or lombok?
thank you !
When you re-enter you can buy the USD 35 visa on arrival. That visa can be extended once by another 30 days. You cannot extend in the airport but will need to visit the nearest immigration office to where you stay. The extension process will take 5 working days, require 3 visits and will cost you another USD 35 for the second 30 days. You can start the extension process immediately and latest 1 week before your first visa expires.
Hey, I’m from Bangladesh and this is my first ever trip outside my own country. is it ok if I want to come Indonesia (Bali) for a trip on arrival. Please do let me know. thanks

HELLO !
I AM A BANGLADESHI citizen which falls under 169 countries list , therefore , I am entitled to get FREE VISA on arrival , is that right ?
yes that is correct providing you meet the minimum requirements as described in chapter 1 above.
Hello, VoA i understand. How to apply for the free visa? Can i do that as well on arrival or do i have to go to the embassy in my country?
If you are one of the 169 countries in the list above then you can just travel to Indonesia and get the free visa when you enter the country providing you meet the minimum requirements.
HI. im a pakistani passport holder but I live in Canada and have a Permanent Residence card, do I still need to apply for a visa or I am eligible for on arrival visa ?
The visa regulations depend on your nationality, not your residence card for another country.
Hi Im from Iceland and Im aware of the visa requirements. I will most likely get the extended visa on arrival. However, do you know if I need to have a ticket already out of the country when entering? Im not sure about my travels yet or when Im leaving Bali, before 30 days or if i will use all my 60 days there.
So, can I enter the country with no ticket out of the country and buy the visa with possible extension?
Yes you need a ticket out of Indonesia. Generally the ones that will be strict on this is the airline on which you will be flying into Indonesia. If they notice that you are flying into the country but have not booked a flight to leave they may refuse you to board the plane.
I am from China and currently stay in Singapore under long term social visit pass. Can I enter Indonesia under the 30days free visa upon arrival ?

Hi there! just some clarification on the visa free entry. My sister and I hold Ugandan passports ( I live the US and her Kenya) and our country is listed among the 169 visa free entry countries. Does this mean we will just get an entry stamp on arrival? We will be staying for 2 weeks between Jakarta and Bali but it says we can’t get in through Jakarta, so we should fly in to Bali first then go to Jakarta? Thanks in advance!
If you meet the requirements in chapter 1 above then you are eligible for a free 30 day visa when entering the country.

Hi ketut.. im from USA i wonder if i can book a round trip visiting bali for 2 weeks with my US green card.. please advise ..thanks in advance
Whether you can enter Indonesia depends on your nationality

Your US green card has no value in Indonesia. Whether you can get the free 30 day visa depends on your nationality. If your nationality is one of the above countries then you can get enter Indonesia.
how much time it takes to get Indonesian visa as Pakistan is not on list of visa on arrival countries.
Please ask your nearest Indonesian Embassy as unfortunately I do not know the answer. If you do have accurate info for Pakistan visitors please let me know and I will gladly add it to this post.
Hi I am a Filipino …I have been to Jakarta last January 2018 and stayed there for only 3 days and got back home in Philippines . I wanna visit my friend at Pekanbaru and I will be passing through Jakarta … Do i need a visa entering Pekanbaru? or what are the other necessary requirements needed ? Thank you.
We are Spanish and Swedish passport holders, and thinking to stay around 30 days, leave the country for Timor or Brunei few days and then come back to Indonesia.
can we enter the country again visa free?
Yes that is possible
Hi, I am french citizenship. I understand I can get a free visa for 30 days. However will it be possible to then pay the 35USD to extend the visa for an extra 30 days (I plan to visit Bali for 45 days total). Thank you
There are 2 tourist visas. There is the free visa (cannot be extended) and the VOA (can be extended). When you do enter Indonesia you have to make sure you get the VOA and pay USD 35 on arrival. This visa can be extended once by another 30 days. You will have to pay another USD 35 for this extension. So a 60 day visit will cost you USD 70 (2x $35). You can start the extension process immediately and latest 7 days before the end of your first 30 day visa. The visa extension has to be done at the immigration office nearest to where your hotel is. You cannot extend your visa at the airport.
Hi.. Im from philippines I went to Indonesia three consecutive months using the free 30days visa… Arrivals are december 18, january 16 and febuary 13 this year… I left indonesia last march 14,2018 and i saw a note(immigration officer write) in my passport on my departure/arrivals stamp 1,2,3…i didnt saw that time so i dont have the chance to ask why they write… No im planning to enter indonesia again by april using free 30days visa.. Will i have a problem with that note? What is the meaning of that note? How many times i can enter indonesia using free 30days visa?
Thank you.
Honey girl
There is no limit on how often you can enter on the free visa. However, if you visit Indonesia A LOT the immigration officers may start to ask more questions to ensure that you do not use the tourist visa for reasons of business or work.
We are flying into Padang Minangkabau International Airport and then taking a boat out to Mentawai islands. We are Australian. We have been informed that we have to pay a Surf VISA fee as we are bringing in two surfboards. Is this correct and how much is payable and in what currency? Rp or US? Thank you
The surf fee may be something local but is not required by Indonesian Law.
Hi,
I have a question, my dad hold a Albanian passport. We are thinking to go 2weeks in Bali, 2weeks in Philippines and 2 weeks in Vietnam. Does he need to apply for a visa in these countries if yes can he online to get on arrival visa?
Thanks
Anna
If your father meets the requirements in chapter 1 above then he is eligible for a free 30 day visa in Indonesia. I am not familiar with the visa requirements in the Philippines and Vietnam.
Hi, I’m married to an Indonesian lady, but we live and work in Kuala Lumpur. We quite frequently travel to Indonesia at least once every two months to visit her family. I have a 212 visa (Multiple entry visa) which expires in April 2018. We were last in Bandung in February and the immigration officials asked me for my visa. I’m wondering how valid or official or accepted are the new visa free countries? If I am eligible (from Botswana) for visa free entry why then are immigration officials still asking to see my visa (which happens to be in my old passport. I had a new passport issued in November 2017). Thank you for your kind attention.
Hi, I’m Somalia passport holder and living in Saudi Arabia and like to visit Indonesia, how to apply visa? And can I have visa on arrival?

HI
I am Indian planning to visit Jakarta this month,

India is on the list of the visa free countries and you do not need to pay.
Hi,
I am a Bangladeshi citizen. Myself, along with my family members would like to visit Bali island. I got confused regarding the fact that, my country’s name is on the list of 169 countries, but not in the list of countries for which the on arrival policy is applicable. Can we still come without visa formalities and expect that visa on arrival will still be applicable for us to visit Bali?
Please Advise.
Thanks.
Yes that is correct. Some countries can get 2 different visas (69 countries) while other countries can only get the 30 day free visa. Bangladeshi citizens can only get the free 30 day visa which is generally sufficient for the majority of travellers.
Hi, I went out and in Indonesia every 25-30 days during a few months to renew the tourist visa.
I went to Singapore, stay 1 day and comeback.
But last time Singapure inmigration told me that it’s not legal to go To Singapore for one day to renew my indonesian tourist visa every time.
Is it true?
They wrote my name and passport and they said that next time that I go to Singapore for one day, I will be deported to Indonesia. Im european.
I dont know if it’s true or not.
I thought it’s not ilegal to go out and in Indonesia to renew my tourist visa.
Please, could you tell me if Im right or not? Thank you
While it is legal to exit/enter Indonesia on the same day, it may be illegal to enter/exit in Singapore within the same day. As you might have realised already, immigration officers can be grumpy and they probably do not like the extra work they are getting every day from the hundreds of visitors from Indonesia who only visit Singapore for a few hours and do not spend much. My suggestion would be to switch visa runs between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore or spend a night in Singapore or don’t tell the immigration officers that you are leaving the same day.
Dear Ketut,
Thank you for the answer.
In Singapore I stayed one night every time but Inmigration told that it’s not legal for visa proposes. They wrote my name in black list in case I go to Singapore again from Indonesia.
What I will do is to go next time from Indonesia to Kuala Lumpur and come back to Indonesia. Is it right?
And am I doing some ilegal action to Indonesian country?

There is no law that limits how often you can visit. However, if you visit A LOT then the immigration officers may notice this and may wonder why you spend so much time in Indonesia on a tourist visa. If they suspect you are abusing the visa (e.g. working illegal) then they may refuse you entry even if they cannot prove it. If you have to be in Indonesia a lot then maybe have a look at getting a 6 month social visa or business visa.
I`m From Comoros and i`m planning to go to Bali in 2 days. I`m in Malaysia but I`m having trouble reaching the embassy here. Please are you absolutely sure about this information because then I can just go to airport otherwise I may have problem. Is this information real, because I can see Comoros in there? Thank you.
Comoros is included in the list of countries that receive a 30 day free visa. You can see a copy of the law in the post above.

I’m Malaysian. I want to travel for 40 days in Indonesia. Do I need to apply for social visa? I understand that I get free 30day visa stamp. But I’m staying for 40 days. I don’t see Malaysia on the list of countries that can apply Visa on Arrival at the airport. What do I do?
You can enter on the first 30 day free visa. Then leave and return Indonesia on the same day and stay for another 30 days. Alternatively you can apply for a 60 day visa before travelling.
